¿Por qué español?
I have a fascination with Spanish and other foreign languages, and I have since I was in kindergarten. When I found out I was pregnant with Gabriela in 2020, I knew I would want to equip my future children with the skill of being multilingual, so I decided I’d aim to speak only Spanish to them most of the time. When it was time for me to return to work, I looked far and wide for a Spanish immersion daycare for Gabriela, or even a Spanish nanny, but came up with nothing in Harford County or anywhere nearby. I was appalled! My husband agreed to make the 25 minute commute each day to bring her to a daycare center where one of the teachers was Colombian and agreed to speak Spanish to her. This didn’t go as planned, though, as (obviously) none of the other children or teachers spoke Spanish, so Gabriela’s exposure was very limited. Fast forward a few months after she started at this center—I became pregnant with her sister, Sofia. Since paying $900/week in daycare was financially unsustainable, I pondered opening my own home daycare. While doing research and taking trainings to become licensed, I decided to fill the gap that Harford County and surrounding areas had, and opened the first Spanish Immersion home daycare around!
